Three Things I Hate About The New Superman Movie Trailer
And yes I am Serious
Hello Musties,
It has been a crazy couple of weeks with the fires in Los Angeles. Michelle and I had to evacuate for some time but we are back in our home and safe. We are very thankful and grateful. I am just so proud of the city of Los Angeles and our fire department working so hard for all of us.

I watched the hopeful new Superman trailer but in the back of my mind, I knew something was wrong.
Why this Lois is the worst!
Let me start by saying this: I don’t think the new Lois Lane truly embodies the character. While the actress is undeniably talented, her portrayal feels subdued, blending into the background rather than commanding attention. I struggle to see her as someone who could stand shoulder to shoulder with Superman, helping him solve crimes as an equal partner. Instead, she feels more like a bystander along for the ride.
For me, Lois Lane is best represented by the versions from The Adventures of Superman series or Lois & Clark. Both of those renditions captured the essence of her character—strong, independent, and iconic. I was hoping this new take on Superman would give us something closer to that timeless portrayal of Lois.

Why can’t Superman fill his shorts
It’s unsettling how many people overlook this, but let’s address it—starting with the opening scene showing Superman lying in the snow. We’ll talk about the blood in a moment, but for now, let’s focus on something just as glaring: the fact that Superman doesn’t have the thighs to fill out his iconic suit. You might be laughing right now, thinking this is absurd, but I’m completely serious. Superman is supposed to be the pinnacle of human (and Kryptonian) perfection—biologically and genetically superior, someone who commands attention and awe just by walking into a room.
Instead, I’m left unimpressed. I can’t take this version of Superman seriously when I know I could fill out those shorts better than he does—and I’m not even fit! This isn’t just nitpicking; it’s a visual misstep that undermines the very essence of the character. If they need to, they should use CGI to fix this for the final production, because a Superman who skips leg day simply won’t do.
Bloodied and battered
And yes, I had a problem with the blood. It was disturbing and downright unpleasant to see. Watching Superman in such a battered and bloodied state felt completely out of place. I understand that the director is aiming for a more realistic, gritty, and perhaps sympathetic take on the character, and it seems to have resonated with many viewers. But for me, this isn’t my Superman.
My Superman doesn’t get beaten to a pulp, he’s the one who handles the situation with strength and composure, even if he’s holding back. Seeing him reduced to this level, needing to be patched up like he’s some ordinary person, is just ridiculous. That’s not the Superman I know or want to see.
Did you like the new Superman trailer? |
Now all this to say I did love the trailer. I just had things that I hated about it and I had to get them off my chest and I really appreciate all of you reading through this newsletter. I am still planning on watching this movie and I hope that it is a huge hit. Things seem to be better when Superman is doing well.
What I am interested in now with Superman is the type of story that James Gunn is going to tell. Because in the past Gunn has recognized that there is superhero fatigue and has an interesting solution to it.
Part of what achieving this comes down to, Gunn seemed to suggest, is recognizing that “there is such a thing” as superhero fatigue, even if it actually “doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes.
“It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character,” continued Gunn. “We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story.”
So I think this is good news that we’ll get a great Superman movie that is emotionally grounded. What that may look like I'm not sure but we can speculate in the months to come before the movie comes out.
In Conclusion
2025 looks to be a spectacular year when it comes to storytelling we have some great movies to look forward to. What the stories tell us about ourselves in our current society and what we do after we have heard those stories is all of us the writers and the consumers.
