4 Years Since ChatGPT

In November of 2026, it will be four years since the release of ChatGPT. And now I wonder, have LLMs made the world a better place? When it comes to artificial intelligence, I believe we are at a tipping point in society and in creative work. Unfortunately, the robots promised decades ago that were supposed to clean our rooms, do our laundry, and water our plants, have come for our artistry and our writing. And the hyper-capitalistic system that we have developed in this country seems to not care about us as creatives, or continuing our creative work, as long as it makes them more money. This is the state that we are in as of April 2026.

Alas, I have been using Large Language Models and have found them to be useful… and also irritating.

Here are three things that I found when using LLMs

1. You need to use different models. I know the marketing from companies like OpenAI or Anthropic may make it seem that just their one model can solve all of your problems, but that is not the case. GPT and Claude are good at different things. I have used GPT to update my resume with a prompt such as:

“Create a new resume for me from the attached pdf.”

But on complex coding tasks, like building a web app from scratch, I have used Claude Opus with a prompt such as:

“Write the React code for a simple clicker game web app that is also responsive.”

Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of different Large Language Models will help you accomplish your tasks quicker.

2. When writing a story, use a LLM as a name generator, and to help you outline your plot. Naming is hard, very very hard. Naming things is actually one of the toughest aspects of computer programming and writing because a great name can make computer code understandable, and a great character name can evoke the correct emotion you want your reader to feel.

3. As soon as you can, learn how to run a LLM locally on your computer. Now, this may not seem practical, but it is necessary.

We are finally entering the post social media era. Meta has lost a court case where the company is receiving the blame for someone’s addiction and depression.

What did you learn about social media and web apps in general? They sell your data to the highest bidder. So, we are not going to give our data to new apps thinking something different is going to happen. I don’t care what these companies say about protecting your privacy, your prompts, or your data. The absolute best way to protect yourself and your family is to use LLMs locally.

If you’re stuck with having to use an online LLM, then at least use duck dot ai or google’s gemini without signing into your google account. That way, your prompts are not directly linked to you. Do try LM Studio, which allows you to download free and mainly open source models onto your computer and prompt to your heart's content.

In conclusion, the technology is here and you can use it to help you in your writing process or daily tasks. But don’t let AI, or in this case LLMs, do the writing for you. The creative process is very important for us as humans because it allows us to stretch and grow our minds. At the moment, the current beastly system is forcing us to use this technology even though it is not making the world a better place. In spite of this system there will be a day when LLMs will be proven a real help or just a small era in history.
