When I decided to post flippantly on Instagram back in December about how my “friends”, stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson we're getting married because I really enjoyed the poster I saw in my local AMC, I didn't really think I was going to enjoy the movie this much because I thought it was just gonna be a basic romcom movie but it was so much more and the tea was really worth going to the movie theaters twice to see.
The 2026 American romantic black-comedy film written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose relationship is tested by an unexpected revelation during the week before their wedding.
Unknowingly, Kristoffer Borgli takes us into the depths of the conflict early on in the film with the reveal that our innocent female character Emma planned and almost executed a school shooting when she was in high school. This story beat, while frightening and chilling, is a choice that reminds me of Borgli’s 2023 film “Dream Scenario”.
Kristoffer Borgli the writer and director of The Drama
“Dream Scenario”, centers around a college professor brought to life by Nicolas Cage who discovers he has the ability to do something that I will not say more so that you will go and watch the film because it is that good. Borgli’s touch on everyday life with the ability to create scenes that confuse yet progress the narrative are in “Dream Scenario” and in “The Drama”. One of those scenes that I will not forget is when we get an imagined mass shooting at an indoor wedding that has bodies bloody on the ground and a few people running for their lives. Even though this never happened in the movie it brought a sense of reality of what is possible and gave this film a horror perspective that I was not anticipating when I sat down to watch this movie.
There is so much more to “The Drama” than just Emma's revelation. The actual drama is how Emma’s closest people, Charlie and Rachel, treat her. Equally important, the film really makes you think how you don't really know people and what is actually happening in their minds. I really like these kind of stories that allow for exciting post movie conversations with friends or strangers. So without a doubt, I am looking forward to Kristoffer Borgli's next project.
In conclusion, “The Drama” is an excellent film and for now should be noted as a Best Picture nominee. I am giving this movie a 9 out of 10.
