Superman vs Fantastic Four
Who shall be champion!
If you haven’t heard, James Gunn’s Superman is out and now this week came the MCU’s first Fantastic Four movie. Both movies are excellent and well made but for the interest of my nerdom, only one can be the best comic-book movie of the summer of 2025. I will not apologize for how childish that sounds because superheroes don’t lie down on their capes and neither do I.
Superman (2025)
A colorful and hopeful aesthetic is finally brought back to a Superman movie. Man of Steel was released in 2013 and I am so thankful we can leave Zack Snyder’s dreary color-grading behind in the 2010s. James Gunn’s approach with his movie is also refreshing in that it starts three years after Clark Kent puts on the cape. Even though the Justice Gang is a part of this movie they never steal the spotlight completely away from the Superman plot. I better mention the dog because everyone's gonna be upset if I don't so here's a mention, Krypto is annoying, but I like it when he mauls Lex Luthor.
The script for this movie is super tight and does a great job balancing between all the different characters and really feels like an immersive comic book come to life but this movie’s score is not great and when it is good it's horribly misused. David Fleming was brought in late to work on the music for Superman which is why his name and original composer John Murphy are sharing credit. As you can see on John Murphy's IMDb page he has previously worked with James Gunn on his other projects like the Suicide Squad, so I am not sure if there was a creative clash on Superman or Mr. Murphy had to step away from the project for another reason but I do think this change and the mixing of the score into the rest of the sound of the movie really hurt my viewing experience of this film.
In conclusion Superman was very good and I like it but it lacked a sense of gravitas that previous films in this genre have had such as the first Iron Man and the first Thor movie. I am hopeful for the rest of the DCU but I hope this feeling will go away when I watch future projects.
According to Box Office Mojo, Superman's global box office is at $432 million. On Rotten Tomatoes the movie is currently certified fresh.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
This movie started with a super chill opening but quickly drew you in into the life of this super family and you really love their bond and it shows throughout the entire film. In fact it is because of their family bond that has put them into a crazy predicament that in hindsight could've been pushed I think a little further in the third act but it comes across as very mature given the circumstances of the plight of earth in this movie.
Unfortunately, this is a film with high stakes and the Earth will be destroyed which is becoming a slight annoyance to me personally but from a writing standpoint this film is even better than Superman because it focuses on its main characters so well. Due to strong acting you easily get a sense that these people have been playing these characters for a very long time.
On the contrary to Superman, The Fantastic Four movie has a wonderful soundtrack and it's used really well to build up the emotional weight of the third act. Fantastic Four is not as funny as Superman but I don't care because it doesn't take you out of emotional moments too quickly.
In conclusion, definitely go see this film because I think this is Marvel's best movie in 2025 but I could see how people would argue that Thunderbolts was better. We all love Bob.
It's too early to know what the box office is but vote in our poll below to see which film you think will have the bigger opening weekend. And on Rotten Tomatoes the Fantastic Four is certified fresh.
Fantastic Four needs to hit more than $125 million this weekend to beat Superman.

Upcoming Movies
Together (July 30)
There is apparently a lot of hype for this film in the horror space. Together is supposed to be the best horror film of the year.
The Naked Gun (August 1)
A remake starring Liam Neeson doing funny physical comedy, what could go wrong.
The Bad Guys 2 (August 1)
The sequel to the animated animal thieving film coming out of DreamWorks. Looks like it will be a fun time like the first movie but probably with more shenanigans with the snake eating its prey.
Upcoming Streaming
Wednesday (August 6)
Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers are back for the second season of the show on Netflix but will both of their characters survive?
