Superman vs Fantastic 4: First Steps
Which film is better?
The Power of Superhero Movies in 2025
Our full two-hour podcast is now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! We had a wonderful time with Eugene Abano and Carlos De la Luz, our resident comic book experts, discussing Superman or Fantastic Four: First Steps, and we can’t wait for you to weigh in on the debate!
It was a wonderful time hanging out with this amazing panel of movie lovers. Here is a part of the episode’s transcript:
“All right. So I kind of do want to get into a little bit, right? So I'm just going to say off the bat, Superman was emotionally flat for me.
That's my main tagline. It's a great film. It's amazing.
I do think it's a nine film, but it doesn't give me the highs and lows that the trailer did that was released, I think, in February or March. And so like that trailer almost made me cry. Like it teared up the whole internet.
The whole internet was crying over that trailer. Got to the film and then the music itself, I think the composer, they had two composers for the film. And then the mix for the score was just not there for me, especially in the third act.
And I felt myself rooting for Lex Luthor with, you know, the one A, one A, one A part, which is like, you know, I shouldn't be rooting for that guy. That guy's trash. So like I never got to a moment where I was rooting for Superman and Clark Kent in those moments.
“And so that's why I still just give it a nine. When I got to Fantastic 4, even though the third act final battle did feel a little subdued, I think that is classic Fantastic 4, right? From the convicts to the movies, they're not the ones where they're gonna go in like Hulk smash or like it's not an Avengers movie, even though they are a team.
So they solved it with science and with logic and little tricks and stuff. But with Sue Storm fighting for her child, fighting for her life against Galactus, like a huge humongous Galactus, I have to give it a 9.5. I have to give it better than that.
And the music and the score swelled my heart way more than Superman in that final third act. And we got baby Franklin and I almost teared up the first time watching it when he was crying over his dead mother's baby, the body. Yeah, so it's just like I didn't get any of those moments.
And then honestly, Crypto. Crypto ruined the Lex Luthor Clark scene for me. And now I'm going to let it go.

Who won according to boxofficemojo dot com?
The Fantastic Four: First Steps opening weekend was $117,644,828 at 4,125 theaters and Superman's opening weekend was $125,021,735 at 4,135 theaters. That's an extra 10 theaters for Superman but we're gonna call it a win for Superman's opening weekend which really shocked me. I did not see that coming at all. I wonder if that's the case of people running out of movie theater money for the summer or people not liking Fantastic Four as much as Superman?
Thank you to those who participated in our last poll and have a great rest of your week.
