Toy Story 5 Makes Us Believe In Toys Again
Subheading
Toy Story 5 is a great film, and I am so glad that I can say that. I was definitely worried when I heard the announcement of the fifth installment of this franchise (we are starting to approach Fast and Furious levels here). Even though Toy Story 4 has a 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned over a billion dollars at the global box office, according to Box Office Mojo, many fans, myself included, did not feel the Pixar/Toy Story storytelling magic. Even to this day, people are still telling me that Pixar should have stopped at Toy Story 3.
But we can’t change the past or the decisions that the creative leadership at Disney have made. What we can do today is celebrate! Because, on this day, our prodigal son has returned. And like the father from that old parable, I want to throw a feast for ma’ boy.
Let us count the ways in which Pixar is back:
John Lasseter is fully gone.
Pixar has learned from the mistakes of Lightyear (2024).
Hoppers proves that they can still make amazing original stories.
Toy Story 5 shows that they know what made Toy Story work and how to replicate it for future films.
If you want to know more details about these points, listen to our full breakdown on our latest podcast.
Toy Story 5 will be remembered as the movie that brought us back to toys being toys, but also the film that helped us realize how important children’s emotions are, and how the objects they are surrounded with, whether technological or analogue, shape their childhood and therefore their lives. The message is clear, these things, though material, do matter. And in a way, the people who gift children their things, also matter. Seeing Jesse come to realize that even though it is painful to have change in her life, she really was making a difference in people’s lives. It helps me to know that I am doing the same in my life. Am I a toy?
From the music to the sound effects to the animation to the voice acting, this is the best movie I’ve watched this year. I want to give it a solid 9.5 out of 10. A movie everyone should watch this year.
I, for one, am looking forward to this silver age of Pixar. Under the creative leadership of Pete Docter, the studio is now ready to make more great sequels, but also tell more original stories. And that should be celebrated because 2026 proves, once again, Pixar is the best storytelling company in the world.
